Lead Engineer, Manager, Architect or Director of Engineering - Ed-Tech, Python, Django big equity

This is established and successful EdTech startup looking to add to their team a Lead/Manager/Director

Salary from 140k to 180k range. + 1-1.5% equity.

Could be called “Director” or “Lead" it’s a Leadership position with a heavy coding position, reports to the CEO.

You do not need Ed-Tech experience, but it's a value-add for those candidates at the higher-end of the salary scale.

Founders are ex-Teachers and entrepreneurs.

Have 6 developers on the team – full stack, DevOps, and 2 junior developers (and 2 overseas)


Office is in Boston, but team is geographically dispersed - New York, Boston, Maine, Croatia - so, you must be comfortable with remotely working or working in the Boston office without the entire team you manage present.

Most of your time (95%) will be remote!

"Here's also more detail about who we seek for backend engineer (which internally we are referring to director, but we need to be more hands on heavy people since we are lacking in execution quality and speed).

We can provide a director role or title if appropriate/qualified, but want to set expectations that writing software, delivering to production at scale and leading by example is the primary job. Secondary is automating every aspect of software platform and delivery process, mentoring the midlevel developers to increase in code quality, and helping achieve customer requirements to deliver better software.

Similar to front end we would like to find backend tech manager/lead/director who has experience releasing, maintaining and refactoring production software for last 10 years (multiple products).

Someone who's super strong in python, very familiar with AWS, Google cloud infrastructure automation (Cloudformation/Ansible) and who has created, monitored, maintained and refactored scalable backend API services (doesn't have to be microservice, but multiple services) and integrated with various third party services. They need to have monitored a lot of different backend services through logs and Sentry/Bugsnag like alerting systems. They need to have examples of quickly responding to production bugs and issues and also have had experience recovering from production failures.

They should be familiar with either/or Flask, Django frameworks, very strong in SQLAlchemy and ORM in python and marshaling and unmarshaling data.

Someone who has done multiple projects involving setting up public/private key/SSL certificates in nginx/uwsgi/elastic load balancer in Amazon and understand OAuth authentication flow.

Someone who cares about performance, quality, reuse, modularization of code and have actual examples of what they have done in the past.

Familiarity with having done production front end software would be high plus since we want backend person to be very easy to work with front end.

For the backend/infrastructure lead description, s/he can be full stack. Also forgot to add that they should have used BDD/gherkin using pytest or equivalent for automated testing.

We want someone who has strong hands on experience and practices daily in these to lead in the adoption of best practice software engineering and increase the skill level of all our engineers to build better software.


We are open to hiring two front end tech leads and two backend tech leads. They will be initially more considered senior software engineers delivering new complex features and new products we develop, but eventually as we scale our engineering team, they will also be nurturing our mid level engineers to senior level engineers and they would be leading teams and planning. The more technical ones with good people skill will be growing into director level by end of 2018.



The stack:

Substantial experience designing and building full-stack web applications using Python, with knowledge implementing server-side frameworks such as Django

• Strong JavaScript skills
• Strong MySQL experience
• Strong front-end coding skills in HTML5 & CSS3
• Experience with Scrum methodology preferred
• Experience with analytics (big-data processing) preferred
